NewsMore Men Who Deliver Milk (Original publication: April 25, 2007) Perhaps milk delivery isn't such an old-fashioned pursuit after all. Last week, we ran a profile of five local companies that are delivering glass bottles of fresh milk to Rockland, Westchester and Putnam. We got such a response to the story that we discovered we had overlooked three milk delivery companies: MJM Dairy, Westchester Dairy and Heathcote Dairy. The three companies are related - sort of - and Matt Marone, the owner of MJM Dairy, is the linchpin. Marone is the cousin of Paul Langiulli, the owner of Heathcote, and the childhood friend of Nick Celentano, owner of Westchester Dairy. And Marone and Celentano have joined forces to create Direct Dairy, a new dairy delivery route that, in season, will also deliver products from Norwich Meadows Farm in Norwich, N.Y. It sounds confusing at first, but consider this: Three of these companies are delivering on routes that have been around nearly as long as glass bottles. "These three routes are the oldest in Westchester," says Marone. "The guys that we bought these routes from were doing it for 30 or 40 years." Celentano, who serves about 300 homes and businesses, says his route is at least 45 years old. He bought it from a milkman who retired. Marone says a lot of his customers can't believe he's the owner of a milk-delivery company - especially considering his young age: 31. But perhaps it's youth that keeps these three men so dedicated. "Rain or snow, you can't miss a day," says Langiulli, who has been doing his route for 12 years. "You can't be sick - you just go. If it's going to snow, you go the day before. My customers know they can count on me." rBST Free Product Byrne Dairy is moving in a new direction. All of our Byrne Dairy milk and cream products will be rBST free as of September 4, 2006. Consumers have continued to request that Byrne Dairy not allow artificial growth hormones in the Byrne Dairy milk. Our farmers have agreed and pledged to support our customers. Because of packaging inventories it will take a few weeks after September 4th before all of the Byrne Dairy products are labeled as rBST free. But you can be assured that our milk supply is rBST free as of September 4th, 2006. Byrne has promotional signage available for you to promote this change. Please call your rep for more details. Thanks, Farm Fresh Products Delivered Right to Your Door! If you see an old fashioned milk box next to your neighbors front door, chances are they are enjoying the benefits of having farm fresh milk and dairy products delivered to them by Westchester Dairy Distributors. Owner Nick Celentano has brought new life to the 30 year old company by adding many distinctive products to the already extensive list of items that he delivers twice a week to customers in lower Westchester. "My service is important to the community," he says. "My clients lead such busy and hectic lives. Why bundle your children up to go to the supermarket when you can receive farm fresh dairy products right at your door! I save people time, fuel, money and the aggravation of waiting in long supermarket lines!" Westchester Dairy Distributors sells farm fresh eggs, butter, yogurt, half and half, chocolate milk, heavy cream, cottage cheese, sour cream, cream cheese and american cheese. In addition, they also carry bacon, Tropicana juices - apple, cranberry, grapefruit, orange, wheat and white Wonder Bread and Poland Spring and San Pellegrio bottled water. All the staples in the dairy spectrum and more! The preservative free milk comes from an upstate New York farm so it is really fresh, Celentano reports. There are no hormones or pesticides used in the milk production, "glass bottled milk tastes better than milk from store bought cartons. The bottles are sterilized at the factory. Glass is a better container for milk because it stays fresher and colder in the refrigerator." Come rain or come snow, just like the postal service slogan, Celentano delivers. Starting his route around 1:15 am, customers receive their orders before they wake up! "I lover delivering to people that have young children," Celentano concludes, "because I know that with the help of my products they will grow healthy and strong!" Westchester Dairy Distributors services Pelham, Bronxville, Eastchester, Fleetwood, New Rochelle and Scarsdale. Prices are reasonable and competitive with supermarket prices. Deliveries can be made to homes, schools or offices. And Celentano provides the milk box!
