The Milkbox
Our Dairy Blog
Can you imagine a life without milk? It just might be pretty easy to imagine life without milk since so much of our foods, both processed and made at home, are made with milk and we just take it for granted. On the other hand, it's such a part of American culture like coming home to milk and cookies or for us folks in colder regions, warming up with some hot chocolate, and we can't leave out ice cream. It's good for us because of what it gives us nutrionally but not so good if we have to much of the "whole" milk because of the fat content. Then there are the latest environmental concerns of the agriculture industry's impact. So let's look at milk, good and bad, and see if we can imagine life without it.
What's so great about milk?
Milk contains more calcium than all other foods. Dairy products are the richest source of calcium and our bodies need it to build strong teeth and bones. Along with your heart, muscles and nervous system need calcium to function properly. Calcium in your diet will most likely help lower your risk of disease, including the bone-thinning disease osteoporosis.
All dairy products; milk, cheese and yogurt are both versatile and a nutritious source of protein. A cup of milk to make pancakes, a little sour cream for the onion dip, and ricotta cheese in your lasagna or calzone. When you think of how often you eat dairy products, you start to see just how much it is a part of our favorite, regular foods.
What's not so great about milk?
The not so great issue is that whole milk dairy products are high in fat, especially saturated fat and calories. But that is not necessarily bad if you choose to moderate your intake and that is really a personal choice. But let's go back to what's great about milk. Fat-free and low-fat milk products provide the same nutritional benefits without the excess fat and calories. So choose reduced fat (2% fat), 1% fat and fat-free milk if you use a lot of it. Every pound off the fat scale will help keep you healthy and we can all use the calcium!
About our milk
Besides the direct nutritional and fat related pros and cons, milk has been in the news for other environmental reasons, namely hormones and antibiotics. Agri-business is very keen on production and Recombinant Bovine Somatotropin (rBST) is a genetically engineered form of a natural hormone that boosts milk production. We sell milk without rBST only since we really do enjoy milk ourselves and don't want anything to prevent that goodness.
Organics addresses the absence of any man-made toxins, additives, medicines, etc., in our foods and especially milk from cows where antibiotics given to prevent disease find their way into the milk, and ultimately into our environment and us. We also sell organic milk and dairy products so you can still have all the natural goodness of that cold fresh glass of milk without worrying about "what else" might be in that glass.
